Black and White Darkroom Photography Gallery

Limited Edition Silver Gelatin Darkroom Prints.

Processed by hand in a traditional wet darkroom and toned in a selenium bath for just a touch of warmth, these beautiful black and white silver gelatin prints measure up to the highest of artwork standards.

With limited production of only 10 pieces per image these collectable fine art prints are perfect for the fine art collector.

Each print is numbered, signed and framed in a hand crafted oak frame which is also made by me.

The origins of one of the most widely recognized analog processes date back to the 1880s. The main component in this process is, of course, the gelatin silver print paper. This paper features light-sensitive silver salts embedded in gelatin. The silver halides of the paper capture photons as light is passed through the film via an enlarger and darken when treated with the developer. It results in the positive print from negative film, wherein the thin or clear areas of the film negative let more light through, exposing the paper more to create black or shadow tones and denser (darker) areas of the negative allow less light to pass creating the highlight tones. After exposure and development of the negative in a chemical bath, these silver compounds ultimately form the positive image.

The best part about gelatin silver prints is that the resultant photographs have a smooth, even image surface. To further enhance this, I add additional chemicals (Selenium) to the gelatin silver prints. This not only alters the tone of the image but also makes the print more permanent and long-lasting.

Until the 1970s, photographers used this process to create exclusive high-quality black and white photos. Although the process was prevalent back then, it has fewer takers now, making gelatin silver printing an antiquated, historical process. Despite this, some photographers find the entire process worth the effort, which is why I still use this method today to come up with class-apart imagery.
